Shidoshi Kyle Hayes at Summit Martial Arts 6-24-22

In 1985 Kyle Hayes began studying martial arts. He traveled to Indianapolis and studied with his martial arts teacher Robert Johnson (27-year veteran of the Marion County Sheriff’s Department and a veteran of the Vietnam War). Kyle trained for 2 years under Daishihan Johnson before a career change moved him to the Northern part of Indiana in the small town of Warsaw. He married his college sweetheart just prior to the move.

Kyle’s career change to Northern Indiana took him from the automotive industry into a medical device company where he designed and developed spinal and orthopedic trauma systems for surgical intervention. In Warsaw, he started and founded the Bujinkan Kosciusko Dojo, but continued to travel south to Indianapolis over the next six years on weekends to continue his training under Daishihan Johnson.

In 1996, Kyle passed the Godan test and became licensed as a Shidoshi (“Teacher of the Warrior Ways”). He and Daishihan Johnson traveled together to Japan in 1999 to train with Soke Hatsumi (Grandmaster or head of the Bujinkan Dojo). He continued to travel with Daishihan Johnson over the next 20 years on an almost yearly basis, to train with Soke Hatsumi. He was promoted to Judan (10th degree) in 2004 on one of these trips. He would later be promoted to Jugodan (15th degree) in 2010 and was then promoted to the title of Daishihan in 2018.

He currently runs the Bujinkan Orange County Dojo in California and works as an engineer designing and has received patents for devices in many fields including the orthopedic industry and the long range shooting industry.
