Total Self Protection

Many of today’s popular martial arts focus on sport, rules, tournaments, etc. While that has merit, a reality-based combat art is more suitable for realistic self-protection. Budo Taijutsu is a diverse system composed of nine ancient military arts, adaptable to the unknown.

In a realistic struggle, there are no mats, gloves or rules—and fights are messy. Even the harshest UFC tournaments have basic rules, but in reality, anything goes. While we train safely, we train for the worst, including multiple attackers, concealed weapons, dark alleys, etc. A pristine, well-lit dojo can’t be counted on for the real deal. Total self-protection means practical, well-rounded protection of the mind, body and spirit, adaptable and ready for anything.

It’s always best to avoid conflict if possible; however, one can never count on avoiding it entirely.

A Different Way Of Life

In today’s chaotic world, the pragmatic and timeless principles of Budo Taijutsu apply now more than ever, including efficient body movement, limber body conditioning, mindful living, and a focussed mindset. The values of Budo Taijutsu are applicable to everyday life, as well as more aggressive environments.

The principles taught within The Bujinkan are far more than that of total self protection. They are a way of life, often differing from modern trend, but always applicable. This includes, among other things, knowing the underlying principles of nature, astronomy, meteorology, navigation and survival — both in the wilderness, and within the concrete city. As well, we study the way of combat and conflict resolution, whether it be the de-escalation of a verbal conflict, mid-level conflict, or a deadly situation…

Be a Part of History

Bujinkan Togakure Budo Taijutsu (Togakure Ryu Ninpo) was founded in the fog-shrouded mists of Japan’s south central Iga province, 1,000 years ago, by the Shinobi people. It was founded by a class of people who cherished the same ideals as present-day Americans—life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. These freedom-loving people started Togakure Ryu Ninpo through necessity. They were people seeking protection from dictators and feudal warlords who sought to subjugate them. Contrary to popular belief, ninpo is not the art of assassination, but one of total protection of family, friends, and country.

Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu is composed of nine ancient schools, derived from the densho (scrolls of knowledge), which encompass a full variety of armed and unarmed combat. Among other disciplines, these arts address multiple attackers, grappling, strikes, weaponry, choking, leaping, rolling, and throws:

  • Gyokko Ryu Koshijutsu – Jewel Tiger School
  • Kukishinden Happo Hikenjutsu – Nine Demon Gods School
  • Koto Ryu Koppojutsu – Tiger Knocking Down School
  • (Hon Tai) Takagi Yoshin Ryu Jutaijutsu – High Tree, Raised Heart School
  • Shinden Fudo Ryu Dakentaijutsu – Immovable Heart School
  • Gikan Ryu Koppojutsu – Truth, Loyalty & Justice School
  • Gyokushin Ryu Ninjutsu – Jeweled Heart School
  • Kumogakure Ryu Ninpo – Hiding in the Clouds School
  • Togakure Ryu Ninpo Taijutsu – Hidden Door School

The western world is now fortunate to have this art made available to us by Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi (Soke), thirty-fourth Grandmaster of the Togakure Ryu. He has made his art available to the world in hopes that the study of ninpo will promote peace, understanding and fellowship.
